Wright City was first formed in 1857 and named after a first resident and settler of the area, Dr. Henry C. Wright. The city was established to take advantage of the newly constructed North Missouri Railway.

During the Civil War, many of Wright City’s buildings were burned down by the Union Militia.

Wright City was officially incorporated in 1869; however, it did not become a fourth class city until many years later in 1941. Due to the railway and proximity to highways, and later Interstate, travel, Wright City and its businesses thrived and continue to do so.
